The Kronor War (King War) and A Change of Language
After a dispute between the Kalmar Union and The Dominion of
Kingdoms, war was declared between Frederick VI of the Kalmar Union and Henry X
of The Dominion of Kingdoms, which inadvertently brought Whitmount into the
mix. Although a naturally peaceful country, Whitmount relationship with the
Kalmar Union made their participation essential, especially as Olov IV was the
3rd cousin to Frederick. Many of the battles took place at sea,
where the British warships were no match against the might of the Unions’
gunboats. However, it was the land battles where the union fell apart. After a horrifying
defeat at the Battle of Breiðavík, Whitmountian forces retreated back home,
whereupon Tristin Nicholson, diplomat and ambassador of The Dominion of
Kingdoms to The Nation of Whitmount, brought forth a peace deal between the two
nations, declaring that there should be no needless fighting between these two
nations. A condition of the peace treaty, however, was to sign new legislation into
law, changing the native language of Whitmount from Hapsburgian Spanish to
English, whilst still allowing local languages such as Ngál to flourish. This motion
had strong support under to population, who felt more in tune with the Anglican
church of the Dominion than with the Catholic Church of the Hapsburgian Empire,
as it more closely resembled their own religion of Agapeism. To this end, the government
drew up legislation to change the language. The following is a shortened version
of the law, distributed to local villages in order to spread the law without
confusion:
A Change of Language
We, the people and the
leaders of the Shituthing of Whitmount, taking solemn oath to protect our
country, do hereby declare that on this day, July 30th 1836, to
change our mother tongue from the dreaded language of the Hapsburgs, accept and
lay out our tongues to the Kings English, and declare the Glory of King Charles
III, whilst at the same time acknowledging the glorious local languages that
make up these isles. We do so of our own free and fair will, and will ensure a peaceful
transition towards strengthening our two countries prosperity and health.
