Krzysztof of Výšnja
Blessed Krzysztof of Výšnja was a 17th century
theologian, missionary, Storgē and founder of the Agape Church, an offshoot of
the Catholic Church. Krzystof started his mission towards God in his early
childhood, when he was sent by his father to Vilnius to work under Jerzy
Tyszkiewicz. Whilst growing up there, the Great Plague of Vienna, which had now
spread to the eastern borders, arrived in the city. There, he saw the
destruction that God had placed on human lives, and wondered, if there was any
influence from God on human affairs at all. His resolve was strengthened
further when he heard from his father that his mother died in childbirth, along
with the boy and girl that was going to be christened by him. Krzysztof spent
the next ten years of his life writing De agape, vel de studio dei per speciem
amoris (Agape – The Study of God in the Pretext of Love). Once finished, he
showed it to his instructor Jerzy Tyszkiewicz. Upon reading the work, the bishop
threw the work into the fire, calling it blasphemy to call Jesus a parlor magician.
Disgraced, Krzysztof walked for five days back to his home town to greet his
ailing father. Along the way, he spread his gospel to the local towns. By the
time he returned home, he had assembled a large crowd of over 100 people who
had believed him. Once home, he nursed his father back to health, one of his
only miracles during his life (the other being the Conversion of Janusz the
Younger, as well as The Saving of the Gospols). He died 7 years after, at the
age of 76. His life body of work was re-written entirely by him in the last few
years of his life, when he reconstructed the burnt ashes of his previous
effort into pure paper and ink.
